Nancy Kramer set out, solo, for New York City, on August 15, from Portland, Oregon. Her ultimate destination was Brattleboro, Vermont, where she would be attending graduate school for 9 months. She arrived in Brattleboro on September 1. In the days leading up to August 15 Nancy said goodbye to Portland friends, her cats, Zoe and Vegas, and her sweetheart of 6 years, Duane.
